Bedford College students invited to participate at WorldSkills London 2011
WorldSkills London 2011 will be the world's largest,
international skills competition with young people from across the
globe competing to be the best of the best in their chosen
skill.
The competition takes place at ExCeL London from 5-8 October
2011 and it is estimated that150,000 visitors will see 1,000
competitors from 50 countries/regions competing in 45 skill areas
over four exciting days of competition.
The competition takes place every two years in a different
WorldSkills International Member country/region – WorldSkills
London 2011 will be the 41st WorldSkills Competition and the third
time it has been hosted in the UK.
Most participating countries/regions, including the UK, hold
extensive local and regional heats before selecting their national
teams, and so representatives at the global level truly are the
very best of countries/regions.
There are three Information and Communications technology
skills represented at WorldSkills 2011:
- Information network cabling
- IT/Software solutions for business
- IT PC/Network systems administration
How is Bedford College involved?
A group of full-time Computing students who are currently
studying on the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma for Information
Technology have been invited to participate in the WorldSkills 2011
event. As part of our BTEC full-time program these students study
CISCO CCNA modules and thus gain an industry recognised
qualification - as well as extensive networking practical skills
and knowledge recognised by employers as essential in the
networking workplace.
Bedford
College is a authorised CISCO IT Networking Academy and the
students benefit from extensive, up-to-date laboratory facilities
available within the Computing Department.
Steve Deards, Bedford College's CISCO IT Networking Academy's
co-ordinator, said "This is a fantastic opportunity for our
students to network with CISCO professionals, and to investigate
career opportunities in this area."
CISCO, the world's leading supplier of networking, voice, and
communications technology and services, is a Gold Sponsor for the
WorldSkills London 2011 event.
Involvement
with the competition provides huge benefits for everyone, whether
you are a participant, visitor, employer or sponsor.
"Skills competitions in today’s climate are incredibly
important. They demonstrate very clearly the value of up-skilling
the youth of today. WorldSkills Competitions also provide a real
showcase for establishing vocational occupations as attractive and
long-term career opportunities."
Chris Jones, Director General, City & Guilds
