Bedford College Computing students took part in this global
event demonstrating cabling and networking to visitors at the Cisco
"Have a Go" stand.
About 60 Level 3 and Foundation Degree Computing
students were invited to participate in the WorldSkills 2011 event
which was held over 4 days in October at the ExCeL Centre in
London.
Worldskills is the
world's largest skills competition and careers event with more than
200,000 visitors watching competitors from 51 countries/regions
competing in 46 skill areas.
Visitors also had the
opportunity to ‘Have a Go’ at a wide range of skills, with
demonstrations and performances from young people from schools and
colleges which run in parallel to the event. Bedford College students
demonstrated their networking skills at the Edexcel stand, using
kit provided by CISCO, the world's leading supplier of networking,
voice, and communications technology and services, who sponsored
the event. The students were able to practice their communication
skills by explaining highly technical networking concepts to the
general public in a way that the public could understand. They were
also able to explain the components and workings of computers and
instruct the public on the making of networking cables, with the
visitors then attempting to make their own cables.
As part of their course, our students study CISCO
CCNA modules and thus gain an industry recognised qualification -
as well as extensive networking practical skills and knowledge
recognised by employers as essential in the networking
workplace.
Steve Deards, the
College's CISCO IT Networking Academy's co-ordinator, said "This
was a fantastic opportunity for our students to network with CISCO
professionals, and to investigate career opportunities in this
area."
