Students fly high at Bedford College with Monarch Airlines

Maxine Gabriel – SEP Instructor and Senior Cabin Crew (Monarch Airlines), Karen Hutchison – SEP Supervisor and Senior Cabin Crew (Monarch Airlines), Warren Shenton - Safety and Emergency Procedures (SEP) Training and Development Officer (Monarch Airlines), Tom Kay – Director for Professional and People Services, Louise Stevens – Assistant Director Travel and Tourism and Lisa Brooker – Lecturer Travel and Tourism

Flying the flag for Bedford College, students were presented with awards by Monarch Airlines to recognise their achievements in Travel and Tourism studies.

This flagship partnership, now in its second year, is going from success to success in delivering training for cabin crew.  Over a 10 week period Monarch Airlines assist Bedford College in delivering training towards a professional qualification (NCFE) for cabin crew.  Students have the advantage of learning from Monarch Airlines cabin crew and attend a training day at Luton Airport’s specialist cabin trainer, where their skills are put to the test.

Lisa Brooker (Lecturer Travel and Tourism) said:

“Our students gain invaluable experience in working with the cabin crew of Monarch Airlines.   The training day at the airport gives them a real bite of what it would be like to work as cabin crew and the high standards required.

“The training students undergo at Bedford College gives them the feel of real work as a member of crew from day 1 and in line with that students now wear uniform that includes the Monarch logo.

“Our students are training for highly competitive jobs in the airline industry and this partnership with Monarch gives them the edge and sets them on their way to achieving their wings.”

Warren Shenton (Safety and Emergency Procedures Training and Development Officer, Monarch Airlines) added:

“Bedford College is the only college that Monarch Airlines works so closely with, where this unique partnership gives students the opportunity to learn about safety and emergency procedures direct from our cabin crew.

“Students at Bedford College are one step ahead after completing this training.  The partnership has benefits for both partners as we get to know the students well and if they decide on a career with Monarch Airlines they already have an understanding of what that means and the opportunities open to them.”

Congratulating students on their achievements, Tom Kay (Bedfod College Director of Professional and People Services) told them:

“Our Travel and Tourism Department is one of the top 5 in the country and that means great teachers and great partnerships.   Our partnership with Monarch Airlines is a fantastic success and that is reflected in these certificates of achievement.

“I wish you every success as you go on to further studies or employment, taking the excellent reputation of Bedford College with you.”
