Barry Wells Plumbing

Barry Wells Plumbing

A local business for more than 25 years, Barry Wells Plumbing and Heating is based in Cople, Bedfordshire, employing six people concentrating on the domestic market and new-build housing projects.

During that time a number of apprentices have learnt their trade with Barry Wells and boosted their qualifications by studying as apprentices on day release at Bedford College to gain an NVQ in Plumbing, the recognised national qualification of the industry.

Apprentice Stuart McConnell has just gained his NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing & Heating after studying at Bedford College.   The apprenticeship scheme gave him the opportunity to combine valuable site experience with studying in a learning environment and the ultimate goal of a NVQ Level 3.   He comes from a family of plumbers, with his father, cousins and uncles working in the industry, and so he could clearly see the career advantages.

Barry Wells said:

“The staff at Bedford College are very approachable and knowledgeable.  The fact that they have been in the industry themselves is a massive benefit.  They have the expertise, knowledge and understanding of the industry and go out of their way to help apprentices and employers.  They regularly give feedback on how apprentices are progressing so that you are always in the picture.”

“I would have no hesitation in sending future apprentices onto courses at Bedford College for NVQ training.”

What were your training objectives?

“Good training within the company is essential but that needs to be backed up by specialist training at College.  The training we have received from Bedford College has been excellent throughout the years and gives apprentices the opportunity to gain NVQs.”

Were they achieved?

“Yes – there is no doubt about that.  Bedford College offers a lot of back-up to apprentices and those employing them.”

What has been the impact on your performance?

“It is very rewarding to see young apprentices progress in their skills to a level that benefits them personally and also the company.”

What has been the impact on the organisation’s performance?

“For a company to be successful it has to have well trained people.   Apprentices that can learn the trade and become qualified are a real asset to any business.”
